Chapter Thirteen
“Miss Elmsly, have you awakened?” A maid knocked upon Penelope’s bedroom door, a rapid series of swift sounds.
Penelope, still half asleep called out, “Yes, you may come in.”
“No, they can no’…” Drummond’s hushed voice said into her ear.
Her eyes shot open, startled at her sudden awareness of his presence. “Drummond, what—”
“Get rid o’ the maid.”
Penelope cleared her voice. “Actually, I’d like to stay in bed a while longer!” she called out. “I’ll dress myself!”
Drummond slipped from the bed and Penelope was scandalized to see his naked buttocks heading toward the door. She heard the click of the lock. When he turned to return to her, she covered her eyes with her bare arm.
“Oh, sorry,” he mumbled. “A Scot never sleeps in his plaid.”
“Put something on, for goodness sake!” Penelope hissed, glad she had the foresight to don her own nightdress before falling asleep.
He kissed her shoulder, bared by the wide neck of her gown. “As ye wish.”
“What are we going to do?” Penelope asked, her gaze trained on the wall opposite Drummond as he dressed.
“Do no’ fear, it’ll be fine.”
She huffed, trying to ignore the swelling pang of nausea as she envisioned her parents dying of shame and horror at finding them together. “How? It’s already morning. Are you planning on just strolling down the stairs and having a bit of tea with my father on the way out?”
“Ye can open your eyes now. I’m decent.”
Penelope slid her gaze toward Drummond to see him sitting at her dressing table, pulling on his boots. “We’re in so much trouble.”
“Do no’ fash, leannan, sneakin’ in and out o’ places is a Highland specialty.” He winked at her and stood, twitching the curtains open to peer outside. “It’s still early enough that there are no’ many people on the road.”
“Leannan?” Penelope mimicked. She was about to ask what it meant when she remembered how dire their situation was. “All right then, Highlander, get out before someone catches you.”
“What? Ye do no’ want your father to catch us abed and force us to marry?” He threw a hand to his heart. “Ye wound me.”
“Enough jokes. You have to leave.”
He crossed the room and kissed her softly on the forehead. “I’ll send word if I’m caught by the authorities.”
“Don’t jest, just go,” she hissed sternly, pushing him toward the window with one hand, only allowing him to pause to grab his shirt from the floor and pull it over his head.
As soon as he disappeared over the ledge, Penelope crept to the drapery. She looked down to the lane finding it gloriously empty. Pleased at how quickly he disappeared, she found her dressing robe and tied it tightly around her waist. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and appraised her refection in a new light. With white blonde hair and clear eyes, she had always been a beauty. But, now with cheeks red from Drummond’s touch and lips that were full from a night of passion, she would call herself truly beautiful.
